Chapter

Seventeen

As she walked toward the back of the shops with Edmond floating beside her, Jess pushed a message to Maestro, who still hadn’t reappeared. When she began to cross the parking lot, she realized that Edmond was no longer beside her or visible. Hurrying back to the verge, she called him. “Edmond?”

He appeared several feet in front of her. “Goodness. That was very unnerving. I tried with all my might, but something pushed me back like there was an invisible wall right where you’re standing.”

She sighed. “Just as I suspected. You’re stuck here.”

He glanced behind him. “I suppose it could be worse. I do like the woods.”

“You’re taking this exceptionally well.”

Edmond shrugged. “I’ve always been very pragmatic. If I’m dead, then there’s not a lot I can do about it, right?”

“I don’t think so,” she admitted. “I will ask Maestro though, just in case.”

“The cat? What can he do—apart from talk?”

“I’m not entirely sure what he’s capable of, but he is very clever,” she admitted, pretty sure that Maestro wouldn’t want all their secrets revealed. “He’s actually my familiar. I’m a witch.”

He laughed. “Sure you are.”

“This is where I remind you that you’re a ghost and I can see you.”

He blinked owlishly. “Maybe you have a touch of the sight.”

“I’m a witch, Edmond,” she insisted.

“Where’s your wand then?”

“With my cauldron. I only use it for making potions.”

“Can you cast a spell now?”

“I don’t think that would be wise. There’s another witch in the woods who may or may not have killed you. If he found out I was doing spells nearby, I’m not sure what he would do to me.”

Unbelievably, Edmond chuckled. “It seems I have stumbled into a fairy tale.”

“I can appreciate the sentiment.” Jess grinned. “Every day feels like that to me. I only became a proper witch a few months ago. It’s been a lot to digest.”

“Like being a ghost.”

“Exactly. How are you feeling?”

“Sad and a little frustrated, if I’m honest. There is something in the back of my mind that I’m trying to remember, but it just won’t come. Plus, I thought I’d have a few more years of pottering around in my store. Of course, it’s not the same since my darling wife passed away. That’s why I’m considering leasing or selling it.” He grimaced. “Ever since I mentioned I might, Lottie has been hounding me.”

Had he forgotten that Jess was buying the store, or had he not seen any paperwork yet? Though she knew Lottie had seen Edmond and spoken to him, this wasn’t an opportunity to discuss business, no matter that the opening was there, so Jess simply smiled encouragingly. “Let’s take this one step at a time. Okay?”

“You are a very sensible woman, but I already knew that. Daphne Dennison speaks highly of you, as does Amy Crandle. And as I said, I knew your mother. She was a lovely woman. Incredibly kind and decisive.” He didn’t meet her gaze. “She was so upset when you left town.”

Jess swallowed hard. “I didn’t know.
